Tea Myths Continue

While it is great that a recent article, "Good reasons to drink green tea", in the Calgary Herald promotes tea drinking, the article however perpetuates two common tea myths.

These are "green tea is healthier than black tea" and "tea can be mostly decaffeinated by giving it a quick 30-second rinse, discarding the liquor, then brewing again".

Wulong is a family of tea plant cultivars native to China and later traveled to Taiwan. Historically, Chinese people have not regarded Wulong tea as a miracle weight loss beverage. However, wulong tea is commonly served with Chinese meals as it is believed to aid digestion by breaking down fats from heavy foods.

According to data from the Tea Association of Canada in May 2008, some interesting tea facts for Canada:

  • Canadians drink almost 9 billion cups of tea each year;
  • In 2007, the Canadian tea market was worth about $388 million;
  • Restaurants in Canada served 351,644,000 cups of Hot Tea in the 12 months (May 2006 - May 2007);
  • Household purchases of tea are growing faster among households who associate Hot Tea with health benefits (up 5.2% in 2007 vs. 2006);

Tea accompanies food as well as wine does. In our previous issue, we quoted Lu Yu : "In the end, goodness is for the mouth to decide." However, a few suggested guidelines might help to kick start our journey to explore the interplay of tea and food.

I wanted to share a little something with you. I had the delight of visiting Elixir Fine Tea House today along Kensington Road. Please don't confuse Elixir for Oolong Tea House. Elixir is owned by Chamber member Andrew Kang and Oolong watch out!

I cannot describe how much I loved the whole experience. My blind date and I decided to undertake his tea tasting experience.
